working wednesday

Here is my finished Bunting quilt, which is baby quilt sized, made with a boy in mind, although I know we are not meant to be gender specific these days.
Don't ask me what the fabrics are because I bought them as a sale pack at a LQS.
I couldn't find the correct colour for the background and ended up in Dunelm Mill just after Christmas and got a Dorma 100% cotton sheet on sale in just the colour I was looking for.  I know it looks quite grey but it is definitely more of a blue. If I could have convinced myself that it would be okay to use, I could have got myself a poly cotton sheet for a third of the price but I wasn't happy with that choice.
Am I the only one or are there any of you out there who are happy to use poly cotton and save a lot of money?
(I did have a moment's hesitation before cutting into it but now it's done and a King size quilt gives you a lot of fabric for your money).

There is a story behind this quilt and why I made it and I am sorry to be mysterious but all will be revealed over on my Quilt Routes blog where you will be able to download the very simple block if you fancy making something like this.

Now I am working on putting together something with the scraps.

  1. We have all those Cadbury things as well ('cuz we're Canadian and still part of the British empire)and I'm trying to think of things that *we* have that my American friends want me to bring when I go and visit - we have something called "Coffee Crisp" here that they're always asking me to bring. Do you have that there, too?

Your quilt is sweet - and as for the poly-cotton thing - sure - I'd use poly-cotton. Let's face it, we can all be snobby about our fabric choices (I'm all about silk and linen myself as you know); but the truth of the matter is that a poly-cotton is going to last way longer than a cotton is, and with new manufacturing standards many synthetics are as breathable as the cellulose fabrics and are more colour fast and durable to boot!
So it's rather silly of all of us (myself included) to be snobby about them, IMO. :)

  2. Lovely quilt! And no I wouldn't mix poly with plain cotton on a quilt, especially one that is likely to be washed a lot like a toddler one. They would probably shrink totally differently and would end up with pulled and puckered seams. Not pretty after all your hard work.

How about some of the more European chocolates? Some delish Belgian... mmmmmm

  3. Oh i love this bunting quilt was it hard??? my friend is due her third baby soon and I just love this idea! So different. I have used polycotton as a binding and backing but that has been it and it lasted fine so far on my hubby's lap quilt which takes a beating off the kids in the living room!

I love reeses peanut butter cups! A friend brought me some back from the US once and I was hooked!

  5. fabulous quilt deborah - the baby (and his mum) are sure to be very happy to receive it. I've been known to use poly blends once in a while - usually for backings as you get a decent size (king flat sheets) and you get them 'free' when you buy sheet sets - I don't use the flat sheets on my bed, just the fitted sheet and a doona/duvet

  7. your quilt is just cute - I love it, especially for a little boy. I use some blended fabrics sometimes, but I prefer pure cotton (yes, it IS snobby, Kit is right ... but still !!)
As for the sweets - what about gums? We have "Gummibärchen" over here, and our American friends just LOVE that stuff ;-))

Thank you for taking the time to comment. I do try to respond to each one but
if you do not hear from me it is probably because you are a "no reply blogger".
